It can be exciting to find that your child is intellectually gifted. Having a child that is gifted can also be a little nerve wracking because you as the parent want what is very best for your child. You want your child to excel and meet their full potential, but you wonder if a traditional education system will be the best fit. Well, there are programs that specifically allow for the education of a gifted child. Here are a few different strategies that are used to help a gifted child like yours exceed expectations and meet their true potential.
Acceleration
Acceleration is one of the most cost effective ways to get your child the education that they need and deserve while keeping them in a public school. Acceleration is when your child skips grades or takes courses that are above others of their age—such as a middle school aged child taking a a calculus class. It is not uncommon for a younger child to be enrolled into a university or college at a younger age. By accelerating the child's education, they are able to more quickly and easily be challenged in the classroom, and thus they will be able to make progress.
Grouping
This method has been proven to positively impact a gifted child. Grouping is when you put your gifted child in a class with other gifted children. In this type of setting, children can be an aide to each other by challenging each other. When placed with peers of similar abilities, they are going to have a great time learning at a faster rate, and they will be able to feel like they are accomplishing their goals. This is especially true if children gifted in a specific subject are grouped together, these gifted children are able to help each other a great deal.
Identification
One of the most important things to remember is that every strategy is not perfect for every student. It may be important to keep your child on their toes and continually challenge them. For this purpose, it is important to recognize strategies that really challenge and help your child, and how other strategies of education may just frustrate your child. Good teachers are going to be able to recognize exactly what strategies are good for your child. Do not ever feel like your gifted child is not amazing because your child could have a very positive impact on society.
